How does the representation of women compare across KK and Zoella
How does the representation of women compare across KK and Zoella social media pages?
Zoella and Kim Kardashian portray an extremely different representation of women, zoella focusing on innocence and ‘the girl next door’ tone whereas Kim focuses on a more sexy and glamorous one.
On the landing page of Zoella’s website multiple pictures ranging from wide shots to close shots are used, an array of pastel colours are added to these images creating a feminine and soft tone, this creates the impression of a stereotypical girl, due to the colours mostly being identified as ‘girly’. Furthermore a wide shot of the youtuber is featured on the landing page, she is pictured laughing with glasses and a messy half bun, this contradicts the female stereotype and instead implies to the audience that women can be laid back, casual and not put a lot of effort into their appearance.
On the other hand Kim Kardashians landing page features a mid shot of Kim looking very stylish and attractive. A low cut top/dress is modelled on herself showing some cleavage and her upper body, this could be a use of the ‘male gaze theory’ suggesting to women that they should have to dress in a certain way (skin showing) to appeal to men. In addition the use of the off white background creates a sleek and professional sense, this may suggest Kim is an accomplished and polished women, this could suggest a difference to the stereotypical women and instead that females can be successful business women.
Zoella’s preferred reading is herself being a truly positive women, who strives to set a good example for others. Through depicting herself as the ‘girl next door’ women can relate to her and trust her judgement, women therefore believe her and themselves are equals. Zoella has cleverly presented this image to her audiences so they believe they are friends, this tapping into the hierarchy of needs, love and belonging, and are encouraged to interact with her. By including parts of her life which are not ‘perfect’ females can appreciate their lives and not try and strive for perfection.
In contrast Kim Kardashian’s dominant reading is herself being an ideal women, who is always professional, seductive and desirable. By illustrating herself as flawless, females feel they have to strive for her level of excellence, the need to appeal to the opposite gender and present themselves to others as superior, this can play on many of the sections of the hierarchy of needs, self esteem; to feel the fulfillment of being beautiful, love and belonging; building intimate relationships which can be created through the image of a faultless woman; and self actualization; being able to become a successful business woman. Through presenting herself in this way women feel the need to aspire to her level as they feel inferior.
